Why look for an alternative#
Drone-in-a-box is excellent at one job — getting eyes on an alarm fast — and weak at another: watching continuously. One dock covers a point at most 30% of the time; in our fleet simulation four docks reached 91.1% of the year and then stopped improving, because the rest was weather. If your requirement is persistent watch, consider these.
The alternatives#
| Option | Time on watch | Mobility | Weather | Install |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed camera / radar tower | Continuous, one viewpoint | None | High tolerance | Foundation, power, network |
| Mobile surveillance trailer | Continuous, one viewpoint | Towed, hours to move | High tolerance | None; solar |
| Tethered drone | Continuous while deployed | Moves with its ground unit | Wind-limited | Ground unit and power |
| Ground patrol robot | Continuous along routes | Ground only | Terrain and weather-limited | Charging dock |
| Perching sentry (Kestrel) | 99.1% in our model | Flies 12 km in minutes | Watches to 15 m/s while perched | None with a mobile hive |
How to choose#
- Small, stable perimeter: towers or trailers; cheapest per hour, no regulatory overhead.
- Construction and temporary sites: trailers; rental pricing commonly runs about $1,000–$3,500 per month according to industry pricing guides.
- Event or incident overwatch: tethered drones for a fixed scene; perching sentries if the scene moves.
- Large, changing or contested sites: perching sentries plus radar masts, with DiaB kept for alarm response if you already own it.
For the line-of-sight side of this decision see our tower vs. trailer vs. sentry comparison.
Keep the dock you have#
Meridian commands third-party docks. Many customers keep DiaB for rapid alarm response and add perching sentries for persistent watch, so the dock flies to a detection and the sentry holds the picture afterwards.
Frequently asked questions#
What is the alternative to drone-in-a-box for 24/7 coverage?
Options that watch without flying: towers, trailers, tethered drones within wind limits, and perching sentries that land on vantage points.
Is a tethered drone better than drone-in-a-box?
For persistent watch of one location, often yes; it trades mobility and wind tolerance for endurance.
